Practicing Surgeon Pathways
Entry Criteria
In order to pass the fellowship, candidates will be required to hold the following before the fellowship is granted.
Full registration with the General Medical Council with a licence to practise.
Evidence of appropriate professional indemnity or medical malpractice insurance.
Declaration of any current or previous regulatory investigations, sanctions, or restrictions on practice.
A minimum of three years’ experience in cosmetic surgery where cosmetic procedures represent a significant and regular component of clinical practice.
Evidence of active independent practice in cosmetic surgery within regulated clinical environments.
A verified clinical logbook demonstrating recent cosmetic surgery practice, including procedure types and case volumes over the preceding three years.
Evidence of participation in clinical governance activities such as audit, outcomes monitoring, or review of complication and revision data.
Review of PHIN data or equivalent outcomes reporting where available.
Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to cosmetic surgery over the preceding three years.
Annual Appraisal
Completion of annual appraisal in accordance with current professional and regulatory standards.
Professional References
Two professional references from senior clinicians or medical directors attesting to the applicant’s professional conduct and competence.

Credentialling Requirements
Fellowship Assessment Framework
Applicants to the Established Surgeon Pathway must satisfy each component of the BCCS assessment framework. Each area is designed to evidence competence, safety, and professional standards.
Full GMC registration with licence to practise; confirmation of revalidation status; disclosure of regulatory investigations, sanctions, or restrictions.
Evidence of appropriate professional indemnity cover for cosmetic surgical practice.
Verified logbook demonstrating recent cosmetic surgical practice meeting BCCS minimum case numbers.
Completion of a BCCS‑approved Professional Behaviours Course.
PHIN outcome data where available; participation in audits; personal audit of complication and revision rates; outcomes monitoring.
Written MCQ examination; structured viva; observed clinical practice assessment by BCCS examiner.
Submission of three reflective case reviews from cosmetic surgery practice.
Evidence of ongoing CPD related to cosmetic surgery practice.
Participation in morbidity & mortality meetings, clinical audit programmes, and peer review meetings.
Two references: one from a clinical/medical director or senior clinician and one from a consultant or senior colleague.
Confirmation of adherence to GMC guidance, ethical advertising, patient communication standards, and safe cosmetic surgery practice.

- Participation in national or institutional audits
- Personal audit of complication and revision rates
- Evidence outcomes monitoring within clinical practice
- Written knowledge examination (MCQ)
- Structured viva examination
- Observed clinical practice assessment by BCCS examiner at your place of work
- Applicants must submit three reflective case reviews drawn from their cosmetic surgery practice
- Applicants must demonstrate ongoing professional development related to cosmetic surgery practice
- Morbidity and morality meetings
- Clinical audit programmes
- Peer review meetings
- One reference form a clinical director, medical director, or equivalent senior clinician
- One reference from a consultant or senior colleague familiar with the applicant's clinical practice
References should comment on professional conduct, clinical competence, ethical standards and governance engagement
