Frequently Asked Questions for Surgeons

Everything you need to know about the College's credentialling framework, assessment process, fellowship pathways and professional recognition.

What is the British College of Cosmetic Surgery?

The British College of Cosmetic Surgery is an independent (privately owned) professional body that provides structured assessment, credentialing, and professional development for surgeons practising cosmetic surgery. The College aims to support high standards of clinical practice, governance, and professional conduct within the cosmetic surgery sector

Does the College provide a licence to practise cosmetic surgery?

No. The College does not grant a licence to practise and does not regulate doctors. All surgeons remain individually accountable to the General Medical Council (GMC) and must practise within regulated healthcare environments such as those overseen by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Does Fellowship of the College confer specialist status?

No. Credentialing through the College does not confer specialist status and is not equivalent to entry on the GMC Specialist Register. The College provides a framework for professional assessment and development in cosmetic surgery practice.

How Can Apply to the College?

Applications are open to surgeons who meet the College’s entry criteria through one of two pathways: the Practising Surgeons Pathway for surgeons already in active cosmetic surgery practice, and the Trainee Surgeons Pathway for doctors undertaking structured surgical development in cosmetic surgery.

What does the assessment process involve?

The credentialing process will include review of clinical logbooks and case experience, assessment of complication and governance data where available, written examination, structured viva examination, and observed clinical practice assessment.

Does the College replace formal surgical training pathways?

No. Formal specialty training leading to entry on the Specialist Register remains an established route in the UK. The College’s role is to provide additional professional assessment and development within cosmetic surgery practice.

What are the benefits of joining the College?

Benefits include structured professional recognition, access to educational resources, participation in governance and audit initiatives, and engagement with a professional community focused on maintaining high standards in cosmetic surgery.
